Mid Summer Festival and Other Fun Things

The Achievement-Whore that I am, I simply HAD to participate in the Mid Summer festivities, there were just too many achievement points to be "earned." As far as holidays go, doing the achievements was pretty easy and actually worth the time it took to get them. Honoring each of your faction's flames got you 6g plus blossoms that are used for currency and desecrating each of the opposing faction's flames gets you 13g (and blossoms). It's better than doing dailies in Icecrown because it's a change of scenery for each flame and it doesn't add towards your daily count so if you like gold, you can still do your dailies :) Most of the flames can be found just outside towns/flight points or just off the road, and once you've done a few, you pretty much get the idea of where to look for the rest. Or you can be like me and find someone who's listed all the locations and go by that XD

Kady is progressing through the 70's, slower than through the 50's and 60's, but that's the whole point I guess. She's currently 74 and healing and dps-ing her way through Northrend dungeons. The last one she healed was Violet Hold, but before that she healed Azul'Nerub which is super difficult to heal. I want to say nobody died, but I think maybe there was one death because I didn't get a heal off fast enough...

Anyway, we had a warrior tank (not my favorite warrior tank from my friends list, but a decent tank just the same) and we also had a shammy which helped. I think I may have been the only one who had gone through AN before because I found myself describing boss fights, but we made it through without any wipes. Picked up some new shoes and a belt and getting that much closer to running Naxx. The other priest healer in our guild showed me the macros that he uses for healing and I also downloaded Grid and now my healing is better than ever! Of course, the more practice I get the better. The macros are mouse-over macros that allow me to heal whoever my cursor is over and Grid shows everyone in the party in a small, organized box, which lets me get my cursor over to someone quickly. I've only healed two instances so far with this system and already I can't remember how I healed without it!

Speaking of new gear, Ladelyia is currently wearing new shoulders (hard to see in the picture) and weilding a new staff. Specifically, the Spire of Withering Dreams. There is a druid in our group, but he came with us on his Shaman to be our third healer, and my hunter gal pal was visiting her mom and forgot her laptop, so I had absolutely zero compeition for this beauty. XD We managed to defeat Kologarn, who was the boss that dropped the staff, for the first time and it only took us a couple of tries... ;)

OBLIVION!

More later, off to go get a pedicure with my mom and sister!

Tasty Cupcakes

No, I'm not talking about the item that you need to eat for Second That Emotion or Bad Example, I mean cupcakes IRL (In Real Life). The latest guild get-together happened to be on one of our guildes' birthday, plus who doesn't love a reason to make cupcakes?

I knew I wanted to make WoW cupcakes, but had trouble initially with how I was going to decorate them. I typed "World of Warcraft cupcakes" into Google and came up with a couple of things. One thing that came up was Horde Cupcakes by snackordie.com (a video game baking website, <333) Guildwatch: Let them eat cupcakes, an article on Wow.com by Mike Schramm. I thought was funny that I stumbled onto because I've recently become acquainted with their podcast. Anyway, that gave me the idea for Hearthstone cupcakes (which I may or may not do at this point) and guild crest cupcakes, actually having our guild crest as the decoration. I also want to try and re-create the Tasty Cupcake and see if I can't make it as tasty in real life as it looks in my backpack... ;)

So for cake mix I chose Devil's Food Cake because that was one of the birthday boy's favorites, and Classic Yellow because, well, that's my favorite and it's usually a crowd-pleaser.

I found that using a measuring cup with a spout made it really easy to pour the batter into the cups in the pan. There was a little bit of dripping between cups, but it was minimal and oh-so-delicious ;)

Following the recipe on the box was easy and I didn't burn anything! :)

Time to decorate! For the base frosting, I used a can of off-white butter cream and used food coloring to get the various other colors I needed. Purple came out more gray than purple, but it did have a purple-ish hue to it so it still worked. Blue was also grayish, but it was a really pretty gray-blue. See for yourself how the cupcakes turned out :)

More Hunter Leveling

Picking up where I left off, level 6.

Basic shot rotation at this point. I'm pretty much just using Hunter's Mark on everything, using Serpent Sting and Arcane Shot once before the creature gets to melee range and I kill it in 2-3 hits with my sword.

Broke down and sent myself some money and bought new clothes, one of my favorite things to do with a newbie is get the "sets" of basic clothes. I'm now wearing the "Rough Leather" set since I won't get to wear mail until level 40.

Distracted by awesome comic written by a woman: http://www.crispygamer.com/comics/nonplayer/nonplayer-2009-03-11.aspx

Turned in a quest and leveled, nothing new to learn, poo :( More questing and more getting distracted by comics...

So I ran up to Stillpine Hold to learn Skinning and Leatherworking and found out that I don't speak their language which means I can train with them yet. I'm not quite high enough to do the quests where I learn the language so I guess I'll have to put that on hold for now, but at least I know where to go, though I could check in Exodar if I really wanted to.

It's getting late, depending on how much cleaning of the apartment I get done tomorrow, I may quest with her a little more and get a little more blogging done, I have another post started about DPS. It is also the dreaded Maintenance Day, supposedly our realm will only have "rolling restarts" to deal with, but since last week was a little hit-or-miss as far as when some realms were actually playable, I'm not holding my breath.

Naxx in 3 hours and only a 7g repair bill!

(Waiting in line to receive Abyss Crystals from Drenath, our enchanter ^_- )

Our guild finally cleared Naxx in one night, just three hours actually. We had a couple of people missing, so it wasn't the whole guild, but that just means we'll be quicker when we have them next time ;)

We managed to get Arachnophobia which was cool and we almost got Make Quick Werk of Him, we were off by one second according to DBM! We had some people from Broken Kingdom with us, but I know we'll get Werk when we have all our guildies with us :) There should be an achievement for an individual clearing Naxx without dying because there were a couple of us who didn't, "The Undying" is really asking a bit much. I do think we'll be able to get it one day, we just need way more practice doing "The Dance" for our entire group to get through Naxx without dying, lol.

I also replaced a blue ring I had with a purple, but it was barely an upgrade. I need ten more emblems of valor and I can get a really good one, then the only blue I have left to replace is a trinket.

More later, work now. Server training, get out at 8 sharp for the last time XD

Baby Hunter - Hunting as a Lowbie

As I typically do when bored on WoW, I created a new character. This time, I created a character with the intention to blog while playing. Meet Patu.

My new Draenei Hunter. Since it's been so long since I've had a lowbie hunter, I thought it would be fun to go through the first several levels and talk about what new hunters can expect. I have a Dwarf hunter on another realm (my current realm is old and can get super crowded sometimes, I also like to have toons pre-created in case my realm is offline for some reason) and Dwarves get a gun specialization, which I didn't know until I created her. So if you already know that you like guns, go with a Dwarf hunter, if you don't have a preference or if you'd like something a little quieter, Draenei and Night Elves can also be hunters. Since I already have a Night Elf, I opted for a Draenei this time :)

Level 1 - Welcome to Azuremyst Isle

Draenei hunters start off with something that Night Elves and Dwarves don't: Gift of the Naaru. From playing my priest, I already know that I love being able to self heal, so I'm totally digging this new hunter so far.

All hunters will start with 200 arrows/bullets in a quiver or ammo pouch. Since it is now post 3.1, the quiver/pouch is no longer necessary for holding ammo, so feel free to replace that as you see fit. Ammo also now stacks to 1,000 which makes what used to be a tiny little quiver/ammo pouch seem niiiiiice and large :) Your only real move/spell at this point is Raptor Strike, other than that you have "attack" and Auto Shot (which is your best friend at any level).

Right now, I'm off to do some starter quests :)

Holy Cow! 40 exp just filled up two whole bars on my experience bar! Enjoy it, it won't happen again after level 1, lol.

After killing just 7 Vale Moths and one Volatile Mutations, I hit level 2! I have to say that being surrounded by gold light when leveling is one of my favorite things, which is probably why Ladelyia is an achievement whore, I like the noise and the banner popping up XD.

Hunter trainer! I can now track beasts, something that I've taken for granted as of late. Although, when I see yellow dots on my mini map, I keep thinking they're herbs from playing Kady...Anyway, yellow dots mean that the beasts are not aggressive and won't attack you unless you provoke them. Red dots are aggressive, so keep an eye on how close to those you get if you're not looking for a fight.

Don't bother buying more bread and water (health and mana regen type stuff) because you'll loot enough of it later and you don't even really need it unless you're hardcore going after stuff. Hunters aren't going to use up that much mana early on, especially since we don't have many special shots. Health is never a bad thing to invest in, however, so if you are eating a lot of bread/cheese/whatever, be sure to stock up, it sucks to run out. The same thing goes for weapons and armor, you'll get better stuff as quests rewards than you can buy at this level anyway. If you've got a main with 1 gold to spare, that's a whole other story ;)

(got distracted by facebook...)

The upside I've found to being on an older server is that there are fewer people doing the starter quests. I'm currently the only one in my level range in the Ammen Fields. There are two 9's, an 11, and a 12, but that's it. I have everything to myself, killing of Mutated Root Lashers aplenty. I'm actually fighting one in the background as I type this, lol. Ooo a small blue pouch! Yay free bag!

Oh, if you don't have the addon QuestHelper from Curse.com, get it. When you start doing instances, get another one called Deadly Boss Mods. They are two of the best addons you can have and will help you out sooo much.

Visiting the hunter trainer at level 4 will give you two things to learn: Aspect of the Monkey and Serpent Sting. Learn both. Aspect of the Monkey increases your dodge rating, which is something you need until you get your pet. Since this is the only aspect you can learn currently, you don't have to worry about the whole "one aspect active at a time" thing until later. Serpent Sting will also be your best friend (in addition to Auto Shot if you were paying attention earlier). Later you will receive bonuses for having Serpent Sting up, not to mention it's just all around awesome. It's a DOT, which means it does Damage Over Time, and we love those. The next things aren't available from the trainer until level 6 so don't worry about them now.

Since we don't get our first mount until level 30, and that's a long way off, I should let you in on something I didn't find out about until much later in the game. Auto Run. Go into your Options menu and check out Key Bindings. This will tell you what your default Auto Run button is (you can have two buttons for it actually, as with most other things) and let you change it if you so desire. I changed mine to Tab, so I don't remember what the default is, but I never used Tab to cycle through enemies anyway. You still have to steer when you're using Auto Run, think of it as cruise control for your character, you don't have to keep your foot on the pedal.

I'm now level 5 and off to Azure Watch. Once there, I'll stop at the Inn, make it my home, and log off for the night. On the way, definitely stop and do the quest at Ammen Ford because you'll get a free fishing rod and lure in addition to the exp. I have never had this quest go quite this easily. 10 casts of my net got me 10 Snappers and only one Murloc, who happened to drop a Snapper after I killed him! I definitely like doing starter quests while having the whole area to myself :) Went ahead and learned the fishing skill.

Got to Azure Watch, was close to leveling so I turned in my quests. Then headed to the hunter trainer and learned Arcane Shot (another good one) and Hunter's Mark. Also picked up first aid and I'm planning on doing leatherworking and skinning again since they are such a big help for getting armor as a lowbie hunter. I honestly don't know why more hunters are leatherworkers, you can learn to make mail eventuall just like hunters can learn to wear it. Oh well, more business for Ladelyia ^_^

Off to bed now so I can become rested irl ;)
